Hunger Relief

Sodexo, Colby's food service contractor, makes feeding the hungry a corporate priority. They encourage all accounts to make arrangements with local food banks to receive unexpected overproduction due to last-minute count changes or function cancellations and make a point of rewarding outstanding individual efforts.

Sodexo sets aside the month of April as a special challenge for all accounts to organize a team effort to fight hunger in their local communities. Since 2003, our management team has joined with our other Maine accounts and the Colby Volunteer Center to organize, prepare, and serve a B-B-Q to children who participate in the Colby mentoring program for disadvantaged youths, "Colby Cares About Kids". Last year's event fed 700 area school children and their Colby student sponsors.

Each year, Dining Services, together with Colby student volunteers, has joined Sodexo's national annual efforts for local hunger relief through the Helping Hands Program.  In 2010, Colby students, faculty and staff donated $2,477.53 that was put toward purchasing 400 turkeys for area food pantries and 1,221 lbs. of non-perishable food items.

Dining Services also works with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension on their Maine Harvest for Hungrer Program which works with area farmers.  That effort secured 28,000 lbs. of surplus produce that was distributed to area food banks.
