Career Services Mission
Statement
The mission of the Office of Career Services is to assist students and alumni in career exploration, to acquaint them with job search skills and appropriate resources necessary to reach their career goals, and to help students locate specific employment opportunities.
How We Can Help Your
Student
Career Services is here to help your student, from looking for a summer
job as a first year student to finding an internship
to landing the right opportunity after graduation. Our objectives are
listed below:
1. Career Services takes an educational approach to providing services.
Individual counseling appointments,
mock interviews, and group workshops make personalized learning available
to every student who seeks it. We also apply this philosophy in our training
and development of Career Assistants and in our support of the Colby
Volunteer Center as a place to learn about the world outside the college
campus.
2. Career Services provides a wide variety of informational resources.
Our resource
library, databases, weekly email newsletter, and Web site are all
sources of information that students are encouraged to use in career
exploration and job searching. Our office is also a place where
students and recent grads can go to make contacts with helpful
alumni.
3. Career Services provides emotional support to students.
In all of our programs and in counseling we attempt to encourage students'
self-esteem and empower them to do what they want most in the world
of work. To enable students to receive immediate attention to their
career concerns as often as possible, drop-in hours and our Friday afternoon
Career Cafe are available without appointment.
4. Career Services links students with employers.
Our recruiting program, both on campus and off
campus, and the
graduate school fair and job fair we co-sponsor, are ways students
may interact directly with employers and graduate school representatives
with a minimum of effort. We actively seek to help each student locate
specific employment opportunities.
5. Career Services offers additional support services.
Reference
files are utilized heavily by students and recent graduates. We
also coordinate the collection of pre-medical reference files. Information
about graduate
school exams and preparation courses is maintained in our office.
If you would like to discuss individual situations with one of our
counselors, you may call Career Services at 207-859-4140 for an appointment
on campus or on the phone.
