Welcome to the Chemistry Department
Current departmental news: 1/18/2008 - Professor Jeff Katz receives tenure from Colby College. Congratulations to Jeff for his accomplishments as a teacher and scholar.
More news: 7/19/2007 - Professor Dasan Thamattoor recieves NSF grant for Experimental and Theoretical Investigation into the Reactions of Atomic Carbon with Organic Substrates. Interesting divalent carbon intermediates (carbenes) will be generated by reactions with a variety of organic chemical substrates. More specifically, these organic substrates include alkenes, alkynes, azulene, acid chlorides, 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds and molecules with highly strained single carbon-carbon bonds.
5/2007 - Professor Jeff Katz receives CAREER grant from NSF. Colby was the only four-year undergraduate institution on the list of 35 NSF chemistry winners (see Colby Magazine for highlights).
Katz's proposal includes a mentoring-through-research component for minority students. For more information, click here.
7/2007 - Chemistry Free Radicals have winningest season ever! Click here to see the squad.

wishes to make available to interested students and faculty.
The Chemistry Department is located in Keyes Hall and contains
state-of-the-art instrumentation, multimedia-equipped classrooms,
modern laboratories for teaching and research, and the Paul J.
Schupf Scientific Computing Center. Click on the picture of Keyes
Hall for a Tour of the Chemistry Department.
Students in the Chemistry
Department are provided with a firm foundation in the fundamental
principles of the discipline. Students have access to
a wide range of instruments for course work and research projects
under supervision of a faculty that includes specialists
in analytical, environmental, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry. Most students
continue in chemistry-related fields, often attending graduate school in chemistry, biochemistry, or medicine, or pursuing careers in industrial research or the biomedical sciences. Other career choices in recent years have included
patent law, chemical engineering, environmental studies, computer
sciences, and molecular biology.
We have established a variety
of web-related resources for both interested parties and students
enrolled in our chemistry courses. A list of Student Presentations and Publications at regional and national meetings
shows why we are so proud of our students.
A list of
Recent Grant Awards for the Colby Chemistry Department
is also available.
