The Belgrade Lakes Study is a program spear headed jointly by the Geology and Chemistry departments of Colby College. Through hands on faculty involvement, students learn to apply course studies to real life circumstances. The research being performed is part of a long-term study perpetually evolving as new discoveries are made. Additionally, service learning has been a beneficial spin off for the Belgrade Lakes Association in determining future planning for topics such as invasive aquatic milfoil. The current goal of the program involves, assessing the geological composition, as well as determining more about changes in lake chemistry both seasonally and annually. With an overall greater understanding of the ecosystem, and it's geological composition, the resulting impact of human and natural effectors can be predicted more accurately allowing for the community to reduce its ecological impact.
