Colby offers a liberal arts and engineering dual-degree program in collaboration with Dartmouth College, in Hanover, NH. In this program, the student begins studying at Colby and may choose to major in any field. With the help of the engineering adviser at Colby, the student also selects certain courses in mathematics and science in order to gain the background necessary to support the intensive study of engineering that will follow. This approach offers an opportunity to explore topics in the humanities and social sciences outside of the engineering field, and to gain the kind of broad basis for decision-making that engineers increasingly must have in order to defend the choices they make. Students who are accepted into the dual degree program with Dartmouth spend their first and sophomore years at Colby and then spend the junior year at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. There, they take introductory courses in engineering as well as electives in other departments at Dartmouth. Students return to Colby for the senior year, and graduate from Colby with their original class. Finally, a fifth year is spent at the Thayer School earning a professionally accredited Bachelor of Engineering degree from Dartmouth. It is common for Dartmouth dual degree students to continue with the Master of Engineering Management or other graduate programs at Dartmouth. The Dartmouth program works smoothly and has been popular with Colby students. Colby requires a B average to qualify for an off campus program. After qualifying, students apply for admission to Dartmouth during the sophomore year. The Dartmouth program is highly competitive and a limited number of of students are accepted into the program. Well-qualified Colby students are routinely accepted into the dual degree program, and in recent years, approximately seven Colby students have entered the Dartmouth Program each year. Colby provides the same financial aid to students during their junior year at Dartmouth as if they were in residence at Colby. For the fifth year, Dartmouth provides a limited financial assistance package. Students must return to Colby for their fourth year to complete this program. Colby does not support students who wish to transfer to Dartmouth after the third year. Professor Bruce Maxwell in the Department of Computer Science serves as the adviser to students intending to enter the dual degree programs. He should be consulted early in a student's Colby career to plan how to meet all requirements.
