Tragic school shootings around the country have prompted many colleges and universities to assess and bolster their emergency response plans. Colby is no exception. The College recently installed a siren with voice capabilities (formerly used by a town adjacent to the now decommissioned Maine Yankee nuclear power plant) and subscribed to a phone messaging service that allows students to receive information and instructions in an emergency. These complement a broad spectrum of emergency measures, including dispatching security guards, automatically locking buildings, and more. Additional emergency details are online at
