Life After Hoops William Gates, the soft-spoken basketball player whose journey from inner-city Chicago to suburban prep school was chronicled in the award-winning
film Hoop Dreams, told a Colby audience that urban black youths often

Sobering Discussion

Very Attractive
Colby's admissions figures have begun to resemble the Dow Jones industrials.
Every time it appears to have peaked, the total number of applications to the
College breaks through another ceiling.
The latest new record is 4,600, an increase of 300 applications from last
year's all-time high and a 60 percent gain since 1993.
"It's been a team effort. The entire Colby community has been involved, from
admissions folks and alumni volunteers on the road, to physical plant and
dining service workers, faculty, students and others on campus," said Dean of
Admissions and Financial Aid Parker Beverage. "We've all been enthusiastic
representatives of a college that is truly on the move."
