Colby Magazine - Spring '98 Pool's Gold
Led by All-American Geoff Herrick '98, who broke three school records, the men's swim team finished 14th in the nation.
    Herrick won two events, the 100 and 200 butterfly, at the New England Championships, and placed second in the 200 freestyle, breaking Colby records in all three. His time of 1:52.32 in the 200 butterfly also set a new New England meet record.
    Senior co-captain Peter Bowden placed fourth in the 100 backstroke with a new Colby record of 53.08. Sophomore Jeff McCloskey placed sixth in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 backstroke and set a new Colby record of 1:55.59 in the 200.
    The 800 freestyle relay team of Herrick, Bowden, McCloskey and junior Andy Brown swam to a third place at the New England meet and qualified for nationals.
     At the national meet, the men set two more school records in the 200 and 800 freestyle relays, earned two All-America honors and five honorable mention All-America awards. Herrick was named All-American in both the 100 and 200 butterfly, finishing eighth and sixth, respectively. The 200, 400 and 800 free relays all placed among the top 16 as did the 400 medley relay and McCloskey in the 100 backstroke.
