Elizabeth Kellett Craven '23, Feb. 7, 1998, in Cape Coral, Fla., at 96. She was an office manager for Merrimade Corp. of Lawrence, Mass. She is survived by her sons, Herbert W. Craven and Ronald D. Craven, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alice Manter Brown '24, Jan. 30, 1998, in Waterville, Maine, at 96. For 32 years she taught English at schools in East Millinocket, Corinna, Oakland, Fairfield, Garland and Gardiner. She also was youth choir director at the United Methodist Church. Survivors include her son, Bradford Brown.

Agnes McBride Gates '24, Feb. 19, 1998, in Epsom, N.H., at 95. She is survived by her two daughters, Jane Irwin and Geneva Gates, her son, Alfred Gates '50, her longtime companion, Larry L. Champney, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kendall B. Howard '25, Jan. 9, 1998, in Northport, N.Y., at 95. He earned a master's degree in education from Harvard and was principal of Manhassett (N.Y.) High School from 1931 to 1962. He is survived by his sons, John F. and Deane Howard, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

C. Stanley Corey '28, Feb. 25, 1998, in Green Valley, Ariz., at 90. He taught for 38 years at Keuka College and Kent State University, interrupted by Navy service in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Katharine, his two children and a grandchild.

Sydney P. Snow '28, Mar. 14, 1998, in West Boylston, Mass., at 92. He attended MIT and for five years was principal of Rockport (Maine) High School before joining Heald Machine Co. in Worcester, Mass., where he worked as a mechanical engineer for 34 years. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marion Richardson Snow '32, a daughter, two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A. Louise Cone '29, Feb. 27, 1998, in Saxtons River, N.H., at 90. She taught European history at high schools in Rumford and Bangor, Maine, and in Winchester, Mass., retiring in 1972. She leaves her friend, Carlie Neff.

Elsie Lewis Everest '29, Jan. 28, 1998, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., at 89. She received her master's degree from Boston University and was assistant dean of women at Colby before becoming dean of women at Green Mountain Junior College in Vermont. Survivors include her daughter, Martha Lockwood, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Lillian Collins MacLean '29, Feb. 18, 1998, in Quincy, Mass., at 90. She was a homemaker and medical librarian at the Pondville Hospital in Norfolk, Mass. Predeceased by her husband, William F. MacLean '28 and her sister, Mildred Collins '23, she is survived by three sons, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Harry O. Ashmore '30, Aug. 1, 1997, in Oceanside, Calif., at 88. He coached and taught mathematics at Westfield (Mass.) High School before joining the Navy during World War II. Later he taught at the Army-Navy Academy in Carlsbad, Calif. He is survived by his wife, Ava, and his brother, John Ashmore.

Henry F. "Whopper" Deetjen '31, Oct. 5, 1997, in Portland, Maine, at 91. The first Colby athlete to win a varsity letter in four sports, he coached all but track at Maine's Chevrus and Sanford high schools. After service in World War II he coached basketball and taught history at Portland High School. He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Curran and Mary Spagnolo, a sister, a brother, and eight grandchildren.

Florence Conners Vickery '31, Apr. 3, 1998, in Goffstown, N.H., at 88. She worked for several years as a town appraiser for Cole-Layaer-Trumbull. She is survived by her son, James R. Branscombe, and two grandsons.

Genevieve Garran Waterhouse '32, Feb. 27, 1998, in Mattapoisett, Mass., at 88. She taught first grade in Dedham, in Fairhaven and at Center School in Mattapoisett for many years until her retirement. She is survived by her son, Robert Waterhouse, and two grandchildren.

Filbert A. Silveira Jr. '33, Dec. 23, 1997, in Dartmouth, Mass., at 87. He earned a doctorate and operated a medical practice in Fairhaven, Mass., from 1938 until his retirement in 1976. Survivors include his wife, Mary, a daughter, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Robert H. Brann '34, Feb. 21, 1998, in Great Island, Maine, at 87. He was employed at Bath Iron Works as an electrician and lead man until his retirement in 1974. He is survived by a son, Douglas A. Brann, a daughter, Linda L. Manske, four grandchildren and a companion.

Margaret Duerr Hill '35, Dec. 3, 1997, in Amesbury, Mass., at 84. She was a research mathematician for 25 years with the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories in Bedford, Mass., and also worked on research projects at Harvard and MIT. For several years she was listed in Who's Who of American Women. She is survived by her twin sister, Marie Duerr Henry '35, three sons, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Amy H.C. Thompson '36, Jan. 24, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nev., at 83. She was a physical education teacher at Winslow and Waterville high schools, then began a second career as a school guidance counselor in Waterville and later in Las Vegas. She is survived by three nieces, including Patricia Erskine Howlett '52 and Elaine Erskine Dow '49, two nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Stanley J. Washuk '37, Nov. 18, 1997, in Tucson, Ariz., at 82. He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and after the war in postings around the world. He retired from the service as a colonel. Survivors include his son, Daniel Washuk.

Hammond I. Bender '38, Nov. 4, 1997, in Fall River, Mass., at 81. After service in World War II, he opened a podiatry office in Fall River, where he practiced for 56 years and was known for a lifetime of civic involvement. He is survived by his wife, Helene, a daughter and a sister.

Harold M. Wolman '38, Mar. 26, 1998, in Brookline, Mass., at 81. He served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II. A specialist in child psychology, he was a member of the staffs of Massachusetts General, Boston Floating, Boston State and Charles River hospitals and also was an associate professor at Tufts University School of Medicine. He leaves his wife, Marilyn, two brothers, including Gordon Wolman '41, nieces and nephews.

Robert V. Canders Jr. '39, Feb. 8, 1998, in Stamford, Conn., at 80. After service in World War II, he worked for Amica Mutual Insurance Co., and in 1967 he became regional vice president for Amica's New York state operations. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annie, their two sons, Roger J. Canders and Steven A. Canders '69, four grandchildren and two nephews.

M. Esther MacBride Parsons '39, Dec. 22, 1997, in Key Colony Beach, Fla., at 79. She volunteered many hours in community care and service, including playing piano at local nursing homes. She is survived by her sons, John, Martin, Lawrence and Steven Parsons '73, her daughter, Elizabeth Dawson, and nine grandchildren.

Robert W. Hough '56, Feb. 19, 1998, in Boston, Mass., at 64. He was a security guard at Nova Biomedical Co. in Wellesley, Mass. He leaves his wife, Margaret, and two sons, a daughter and a granddaughter.

Charles C. McDowell '65, Mar. 9, 1998, in Tempe, Ariz., at 54. A decorated pilot who flew 100 missions over North Vietnam, he was an aircraft salesman and demonstration pilot for Cutter Aviation in Phoenix. He is survived by his wife, Louise A. Reburn McDowell '66, and two sons.
