Colby Magazine - Winter 1998 An Undefeated Octobe
A 6-0-1 run at the end of the season propelled the women's soccer team into the NCAA tournament. The Mules, who were 2-4 in September, went undefeated through October in recording a tie with Middlebury and six shutouts.
Tri-captain Kim Waldron '99 poured it on down the stretch, scoring three goals and two assists in the last four games. Waldron tallied 10 goals for the season and wrapped up her career with 29 goals and 16 assists for a Colby career-scoring record of 74 points.
In the first round of the NCAA tournament the sixth-ranked Mules stunned third-ranked Keene State at home with a 5-1 victory. The single Keene goal was the first scored on Colby in nearly 700 minutes of play since early October. The defense turned in by goal keeper Heather Garni '99 led the team to eight shutouts during the season and saw Garni named NESCAC Player of the Week. She ended her career with 28 1/2 shutouts, another Colby all-time record.
In the NCAA second-round game at Tufts, the Jumbos' excellent defense forced some mistakes and kept the Mules pinned in their own territory. The 4-0 Colby loss at season's end was especially tough for six seniors, five of them starters, who went to the Sweet Sixteen round a year ago in the NCAA tournament. The Mules, undefeated at home, finished at 9-5-1.
