Tissue Reissue
The article ["The Issue Was Tissue"] in the most recent [winter] Colby magazine was reminiscent of a similar issue that came up, I believe in the 1964-5 school year when I was a freshman at Colby. Now time often dulls one's memory, but I distinctly remember that one of my classmates, Phil Merrill, was running for student government. He was looking for a campaign topic to motivate the freshman class at the same time that there appeared to be an epidemic of hemorrhoids on campus as someone with a sense of fiscal responsibility had gone with the lowest bidder and gotten a no-name brand of toilet paper that seemed to have sand as its major ingredient. Phil quickly grabbed onto this acute problem and submitted a letter to the editor of the school paper titled, "The Tissue Issue." If memory serves me, the issue caught on and Phil "wiped" his opposition in the election. Again we see that those who don't know history are bound to repeat it-this from a biology major!

Gay-Lesbian Films Available
Thanks to a generous donation by Dr. Larry R. Mitchell '60, the Bridge has recently acquired an excellent collection of contemporary and classic lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, transgendered-themed films. These have been donated to the Miller Library collection for use by the entire campus community.

No "PC," Just an Invite
In response to the letter from Ross A. Moldoff '79, "Newsworthy or PC?," in the fall 1999 issue of Colby magazine, we would like to address some of the misconceptions that Mr. Moldoff expressed. Be assured that political correctness was never the goal of the letter published in the summer 1999 issue. It was simply an invitation to alumni to take part in an organization whose purpose is to provide support and a sense of community, particularly for those who attended Colby when it was in fact dangerous to be gay or lesbian. Colby has certainly progressed a long way in terms of dealing with homophobia and heterosexism. But in a world where people are still attacked and murdered for being gay, it is important for GLBTA (Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, Trans-gendered and Allies) persons to feel that they have a place to turn to. Although this organization was envisioned by the Bridge and a caring group of alumni, the support of Colby and the Alumni Relations Office is a testament to the College's commitment to the health and well-being of its alumni.
