A Maine Sunday Telegram editorial supported a tentative deal between The Hancock Land Company and the Forest Society of Maine to put 10,000 acres of the company's 22,000 acres off-limits to developers. Company president Matt Hancock '90 said the future of the forest products industry in southern Maine–and his family's 153-year-old business–depends on the effort * One of the country's most prestigious fellowships for early-career environmental leaders, the Switzer Environmental Fellowship, was awarded to Andrew Kulmatiski '94, a Ph.D. candidate in ecology and environmental studies at Dartmouth College. The award aids 20 outstanding young environmental leaders in developing expertise to address America's conservations challenges * Wesley A. Baff '99 took first prize in color photography at the annual juried art show sponsored by The Richter Association for the Arts in Danbury, Conn. Baff's exhibition, "Colors of Pakistan," was on view in several locations in 2000-2001 * In his first run for political office last November, Democrat Antone C. Tavares '99 won the Ward 6 seat on the Waterville, Maine, city council, ousting the incumbent councilor and former head of the Democratic city committee.
