Sanctions Beyond Borders: Multinational Corporations and U.S. Economic Statecraft
Kenneth A. Rodman (government)
Rowman & Littlefield Publishers (2001)

Rodman explores the use of U.S.-imposed sanctions from the early Cold War era through the 1990s, including the Helms-Burton Law and the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act. While multinationals are often susceptible to U.S. influence because they fear political fallout, the book demonstrates, sanctions also have fallen short, even as they are widely promoted by interest groups, Congress and the general public. When it comes to preventing economically significant transactions, sanctions are weak and costly measures that can damage diplomatic relations, Rodman concludes.

Fallen Angel
Don J. Snyder '72
Pocket Books (2001)

Upon the death of his estranged father, Hollywood bigwig Terry McQuinn returns to his native Maine coast, a place he's tried to forget in his life as a successful film promoter. As a posthumous favor to his father Terry takes on his father's former role of caretaker to wealthy summer people- people Terry had always tried to live up to and his father had looked down on. Snyder's Christmas novel of redemption centers on 30-year-old memories of a fatal tragedy, family and belonging, and rediscovery of the past and identity.

Pay particular attention to harmonica player James Middlefield (aka Dan Dittman '76) amid the six-member group's solid and clean sound.
