Allen Throop '66

Allen Throop '66 What he did last spring
Skied across Alaska's Juneau Icefield, a 100-mile glacier-crossing between Skagway and Juneau on the Alaska-British Columbia border.

Strongest qualification for a geologist in his late 50s to join three experts on the trek
"I said yes when asked."

What they found at the edge of the ice
Cruise ship tourists brought in by helicopter and 200 sled dogs for dogsled rides.

What they found up on the icefields
"Snow fleas and the occasional unidentified insect... and, once, a wolverine crossing a snowfield high above us."

Distance covered
130 miles in two weeks, including hiking to the ice from Skagway and from the ice to Juneau.

How they navigated
"Without a GPS unit we could not have traveled during foggy whiteouts."

What he felt instead of the independence he had expected
Dependence: on his partners, on the GPS, on high-tech fabrics, on fossil fuel and titanium pots to melt water and cook.
