Women Ruggers Double Champs

The women's rugby club team was undefeated this fall and won both the New England and the Northeast Rugby Football Union Division III championships in November. That's all the marbles--as far as a DIII team can go, since the division has no national tournaments. During its impressive 10-0 season the squad outscored its opponents 163-20 and earned six shutouts.

In the New England championships at Holy Cross, Colby first faced UMass-Lowell on Nov. 3 and won that semifinal match 12-0 with two tries by wing Amy Reznitsky '02. The next day the team dominated Middlebury in the finals for a 25-0 win.

"It's nice that we are versatile enough to play against a really physical team like Lowell and a really technically refined team like Middlebury and win our way in both matches," said forwards captain Tamara Sebelius '02.

With the New England championship in hand, Colby was seeded first in the Northeast championships at UMass-Amherst on Nov. 11. When its semifinal opponents didn't show, Colby opted to take on Division I UMass-Amherst's B-side team instead and won 11-0. With finesse and teamwork Colby then beat a rowdy Niagara University 13-5 for the championship.

"We constantly have fifteen solid players on the field," flanker Gretchen Groggel '03 told the Echo. "There are no stars; everyone on the team contributes."

As New England champs Colby will move up to Division II next year, giving the team a chance to go to nationals.
