Colby Green and the Strategic Plan
In 2002, Colby adopted a new strategic plan establishing a framework for growth of the College over the next 10 years. The plan identified needs for new classrooms and academic facilities, an alumni and development center, office space, and parking, and it called for a major campus expansion to accommodate those facilities. A master plan for the campus was developed, and the expansion was designed around the Colby Green--a new district based on the concept of a New England village green.

Colby Green Site Construction
Beginning in October 2003, construction of the elliptical 75,000-square-foot Colby Green got under way along with site development work for three new buildings that will face on Colby Green. (Lunder House, the admissions building completed in 1992, also will sit on the edge of the green.) Not since the 1930s, when Colby moved from its old campus downtown, has Mayflower Hill seen a project of this magnitude. Some 60,000 cubic yards of soil will be moved to create Colby Green and its surroundings. Eventually 14.5 acres will be developed southeast of Mayflower Hill Drive to accommodate the campus expansion.

Environmental Stewardship
Colby's commitment to environmental stewardship will be evident in all phases of the campus expansion. State of the art run-off management and sedimentation ponds will ensure that the quality of storm-water run-off--not just from the newly developed area but from the entire campus--sees a net improvement after completion of the remediation systems. In addition, buildings proposed on Colby Green are being designed to apply for certification through the U.S. Green Building Council's "Leader in Energy and Environmental Design" (LEED) program, and at least one of the buildings is expected to use geothermal wells for heating and cooling.
