Roadways
With the expansion of the campus across Mayflower Hill Road, there has been some safety concerns about the volume of traffic using the current roads through campus. The College has been in discussions with the city of Waterville and Maine's Department of Transportation for a few years about the possibility of creating a bypass road. The state's biennial budget for 2004 and 2005 includes funding for engineering and design work on the issue.

The potential bypass road being considered would connect Washington Street with County Road (running to the north of the athletic center). If the bypass road is constructed the steep, narrow hill currently leading from North Street up to campus potentially could become a pedestrian walkway. However, any projects approved in the future are not expected to begin until at least 2007.

It is estimated that a bypass would reduce traffic on campus by a third. Traffic calming measures, such as narrowing road width, adding a tree canopy along the roadside or having raised tables in the roads through campus, also will be considered for Mayflower Hill Drive, which passes through campus.

Parking
The same number of parking space that existed on campus before Phase I of the Colby Green expansion will exist after the phase is completed in 2005. Parking lots will be installed to serve the new Alumni and Development Center and current lots by Lunder House will be relocated behind that existing building. Additional parking also will be built with construction of the Music and Performance Center in Phase III. At the end of the entire campus expansion project there will be a net increase in parking spaces and at no time will there be a decrease in the number of spaces available on campus. How much parking, what types of parking and where parking is located all will be evaluated and determined before each new phase of expansion begins.

Music and Performance Center
The 10-year Campus Plan includes the construction of a Music and Performance Center in Phase III. The center is expected to be sited in the current parking lots across from Foss and Mary Low residence halls, but buildings plan are not yet final.
