521 Graduates in Class of 2008
President William D. Adams handed out 521 bachelor’s degrees at Colby’s 187th Commencement, Sunday, May 25, on the lawn of Miller Library. Bob Diamond, a member of Colby’s Class of 1973 and now president of Barclays PLC, shared the podium with senior Patrick Sanders, the student-elected class speaker. Class marshal and valedictorian Christian Vesa of Arad, Romania, led the procession of seniors.

Bob Diamond ’73 Commencement Address
“Take risks,” Bob Diamond ’73, president of Barclays, told graduating seniors at Colby May 25. “Some of the best lessons we get are from our most difficult situations.” Speaking outdoors, Diamond talked about recruiting employees from a very impressive global talent pool, and then told graduates they should enter that pool with confidence. Coming from Colby, he said, “You are very, very well prepared.”

Patrick Sanders ’08, Senior Class Speaker
Elected by his classmates to speak at commencement, Patrick Sanders ’08 of Fairfax, Va., called the last week on campus a “love-fest.” He said, “I’m not sure I have ever given or received so many hugs—or detagged so many pictures of myself on Facebook. All-in-all, it has been quite the four years.” He advised classmates that ,“Being yourself will take you further and open up more doors than anything else.”

Colby’s Randall J. Condon Medal for distinguished service, the only prize presented at commencement, went to Patrick Sanders, of Fairfax, Va., and Laura Perille of Englewood, Colo.
