David E. Shaw. Business leader. Biotechnology entrepreneur. Innovator. As director and cofounder of more than a dozen public and private companies, you have led a life of substantial public service. In a world obsessed with doing well, you always strive to do good. You founded IDEXX Laboratories, a global market leader providing online resources and protocols to monitor animal health and ensure water quality worldwide. By merging your deep knowledge of medical and technology industries, you have successfully provided clinical programs, medical devices, advanced information systems, and management programs through businesses including the National Medical Health Card Systems and Ikaria. You have shared your vision of corporate social responsibility as a Senior Fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and as an advisor to the school’s Center for Public Leadership. You are a member of the selection committee for America’s Best Leaders, and in this and countless other ways you have influenced for the better leaders in government, nonprofits, and businesses. Your volunteer leadership roles have included chair of Maine’s Jackson Laboratory, treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, director of the National Parks Foundation, and founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance for ocean conservation. You served on the executive committee of the U.S.-Israel Science & Technology Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations. You brought world-class businesses like IDEXX and Fetch Enterprises to Maine, you have served with distinction on boards throughout Maine, and Colby honors you as well for the impact of your ideas and commitment in your adopted state.

David E. Shaw has wide-ranging interests in technology companies, public service, and academe. He was founder and CEO of IDEXX, a Maine-based diversified life-sciences company, and he has helped to found and/or direct more than a dozen other companies across a range of sectors including pharmaceuticals and renewable fuels. Shaw has served on the faculty of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and on the advisory board of the Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership. He is treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a director of the National Parks Foundation, and past chair of Jackson Laboratory.
