ABC Newsman Dan Harris To Speak at Colby Commencement, May 22

Dan Harris 93ABC News correspondent Dan Harris will be the commencement speaker at Colby College on May 22, Colby President William D. Adams announced this week. Harris graduated from Colby summa cum laude in 1993 and will receive an honorary doctorate at this year’s graduation ceremony.

Harris got his start in journalism reporting for NBC affiliates in Bangor and Portland and was named an ABC News correspondent in 2000. Before going to ABC he was an anchor at New England Cable News, America's largest regional cable news network. He reports for World News Tonight With Peter Jennings, Good Morning America, and Nightline, and he has covered many of the biggest news stories in the world in the last five years.

Harris reported from Ground Zero in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, from Afghanistan and Iraq in wartime, and from Pakistan and Israel. He covered the Democratic presidential primaries and John Kerry's campaign for ABC and is currently reporting on, among other things, religion and America's culture wars. For his work he has won an Associated Press Award for political coverage, a regional Emmy for feature stories, and a duPont Award for in-depth coverage.

“I am honored to accept the invitation,” Harris said, “and look forward to the process of crafting a speech that will, I hope, be useful, memorable, and maybe even provocative, in the best traditions of Colby academics.”

Colby also named its class marshal for 2005, Mark G. Chapman. The marshal is the student with the highest grade point average at the start of the senior class’s last semester. Chapman is completing a double major in international studies and religious studies with a minor in Chinese, and he carried a 4.09 GPA into his final semester. Chapman is a citizen of Zimbabwe, and his parents currently reside in Scotland. He came to Colby from the Lester B. Pearson United World College in British Columbia, Canada, and is a Davis UWC scholar. He spent his junior year studying in China and is completing a Senior Scholars honors project on the integration of Chinese Muslims into the Islamic world. Chapman is a member of a Colby Christian Fellowship and a tutor for schoolchildren downtown.

Graduation ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. on the lawn of Miller Library. The public is invited to attend. In the event of bad weather, however, the ceremony may be moved into the field house, where tickets are required.
