Answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) About Colby's Commencement

Parents will receive a letter in late February or early March that will include an order form. This letter will include menus and prices. The meal tickets will be issued to seniors from the student post office during Senior Week, which precedes Commencement Weekend.

Commencement Ball
On Saturday evening, Colby sponsors a semi-formal commencement ball. This event is open to all seniors, their families and guests. A live band will perform until 11:30 pm at which time a DJ will provide music. By midnight, most families and guests have retired for the evening, but you are welcome to stay until the event ends if you wish. While some people do choose black tie, the dress code for the evening is semi-formal: jackets and ties for men and cocktail dresses or evening suits for women.

Baccalaureate Service
Baccalaureate is President Adams last opportunity to address the graduating class and is therefore attended by graduates and faculty ONLY. An audio broadcast may be heard on the lawn of Lorimer Chapel, where families can watch the Class of 2005 process and recess as well. Seating is available in the Lovejoy classroom building a telecast may be viewed via closed-circuit television.

Commencement Ceremony
If weather is permitting, which it traditionally has, commencement will occur on the Miller Library lawn at 10 am. Seats are available first-come, first-seated. People with elderly or other guests who may require special accommodations should contact the Scheduling Office by May 1, 2005. Families and guests should be mindful of potential inclement weather and should dress accordingly: jackets and umbrellas may be useful. Restrooms and additional seating is available in the Lovejoy classroom building.

Should the weather definitely prohibit an outdoor commencement, an indoor ceremony will be conducted in the Wadsworth Gymnasium at the Alfond Athletic Center. This decision is made the morning of commencement. Rain tickets will be issued to seniors with their meal tickets during senior week. Rain tickets are limited to four tickets for each senior due to occupancy concerns; overflow seating for those guests without tickets will be available in the adjoining fieldhouse.

A photographer is on contract with the College to take photographs. Parents should contact Steve Schaeffer at 800 356-7789 about purchasing prints. Due to safety and security, no one will be allowed close enough to the platform to take close-up photographs.
