Publicity and News Releases

Why Work With Us?

Your expertise can inform reporters and the public and can elevate the national or regional understanding of complex issues.

Colby's name in the news increases the college's visibility and can aid in recruiting and alumni relations efforts.

Popular press accounts actually boost the attention research journal articles receive, according to a UC San Diego study.

Publicity Services

Communications produces and maintains the Colby News site and handles the Lovejoy Convocation. Press releases will be written and distributed via mail and on the web for lectures that have reasonably broad appeal off campus. For inclusion in monthly event calendars that get the widest distribution, submit information to Ruth Jacobs at ext. 4353 by the 15th of the month preceding your event.

To have an event included in the web-based calender on Colby's home page please see the Event Calendar Placement Form.

Publicity Service Guidelines

To garner maximum publicity for College events and student accomplishments, the Communications staff has assembled a few guidelines to improve the flow of information in and out of our department.

Radio Studio

The Office of Communications operates a radio studio to provide professional, broadcast-quality sound to radio outlets. Professors or others who do radio interviews or commentary are encouraged to contact Steve Collins (ext. 3549) or Ruth Jacobs (ext. 4353) to schedule use of the studio. A Telos Zephyr digital network audio transceiver and a digital ISDN phone line provide studio-quality sound to National Public Radio and other radio networks and stations with compatible equipment.

Media Sources

The media sources, originally designed as a resource guide for journalists, lists faculty members and their areas of expertise. Information in the media sources is accessible by academic department, subject (using a searchable concept oriented database) and through an alphabetical list of names. Questions about, the media sources listings may be directed to Ruth Jacobs in the Colby news bureau.

Sports Information

William Sodoma, (ext. 3769, wcsodoma) is Colby's sports information director. He maintains the athletics site and sends out scores and athletics releases.

Publicity Photos

Communications needs a minimum of one month lead time to distribute publicity photos or press releases, whether we copy your print or assign a photographer to take a promotional photograph. Please send head shots or other publicity photos to the Communications office as soon as possible and not later than a month in advance of the program.
