Applications to attend the Associated Writers and Writing Programs (AWP) Conference in Tampa, Florida, March 7-10, 2018 are now being accepted from Colby Creative Writing Concentrators or Minors.

 

Students who are interested in attending the annual (and very large) AWP writing conference should consider applying. Thanks to the Center for Arts and Humanities, two students will receive $500 each to help with travel and housing costs associated with the Conference. Conference registration will be free.

 

The costs of attending include these:

Air; Hotel (if appropriate, students may be asked to share a room); Food; Possible shuttle costs to and from Tampa airport.

$500 will probably not cover the entire cost, unless the two students are able to share a hotel room. Students may be asked to pay for their own food. It may be possible for the Director of the Creative Writing Program, Michael Burke, to secure additional funding, but that isn’t certain.

(If a student is willing to pay his/her own costs of travel to Tampa and the hotel, the Program can provide free registration for the conference. If you’re interested in this possibility, contact Michael Burke directly without needing to formally apply.)

 

In order to apply, students should submit:

1) A letter of interest, including your year and the creative writing courses you’ve taken, which explains why you think it would be valuable for you to attend AWP.

2) A sample of your creative work, i.e., 3-5 poems, one short story, and/or one piece of creative nonfiction (a student can submit work in more than one genre, if she/he likes).
