Matthew Archibald joined the Department of Sociology at Colby College in 2010. He taught previously at Emory University and Bates College.
Archibald works in medical sociology. He is the author of The Evolution of Self-Help (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007)
Archibald's articles have been published in Social Science and Medicine, Sociological Forum, Vaccine and other leading journals.
Archibald studies the delivery of healthcare in the field of behavioral health. One set of studies centers on informal delivery mechanisms provided by self-help support groups Another set of projects highlights formal healthcare provision by examining the distribution of health resources as well as access to those health resources. A third project investigates institutional routines of hospital psychiatric units.
