Colby is a member of or has signed agreements with the following organizations working on sustainability issues.
NWF Campus Ecology Program
Since its founding in 1989, Campus Ecology has become a leading conservation program in higher education. The program is helping to:
- transform the nation's college campuses into living models of an ecologically sustainable society;
- train a new generation of environmental leaders; and
- ensure a strong future for America's environmental movement. (NWF ©2003)
Maine Green Power Connection
The Maine Green Power Connection (MeGPC) is bringing education and market outreach
to Maine on behalf of environmentally beneficial electricity products. Formation
of MeGPC was spearheaded by Maine Interfaith Power & Light, a non-profit electricity
aggregator formed in January 2000 to bring information and action about "green
power" or environmentally preferable electricity to Maine consumers.
The Maine Green Power Connection exists to provide a single-focus entity for
the promotion of cleaner electricity products and for the creation of an electricity
marketplace that supports and includes those products and their providers. (MeGPC ©2003)
The Institution Recycling Network
The Network is a cooperative institution-led initiative that offers its members
favorable recycled commodity marketing and purchasing opportunities through its
collective strength. The Institution Recycling Network was established in 1999,
and is made up of institutional recyclables generators from New England, including
colleges and universities, hospitals, nursing facilities, and others. The Network
was founded upon the recognition that most institutions can improve their recycling
performance — operationally and financially — by taking advantage of cooperative
marketing and purchasing opportunities. Individually, institutions don't have
the clout to gain the best prices and services in the marketplace. Collectively,
they do. (IRN ©2003)
Clean Air Cool Planet Climate
Initiative
Clean Air-Cool Planet creates partnerships in the Northeast to implement solutions
to climate change and build constituencies for effective climate policies and
actions.
CA-CP is the region's leading organization dedicated to finding and promoting
solutions to global warming:
- We partner with campuses, communities, and companies throughout the Northeast
to help reduce their carbon emissions.
- We help our partners, their constituents, and other regional opinion leaders
and stakeholders understand the impacts of global warming and its best available
solutions, through comprehensive outreach efforts celebrating commitment,
innovation and success in climate action.
- We showcase practical climate solutions that demonstrate the economic
opportunities and environmental benefits associated with early actions on
climate change.
- We advocate the implementation of effective policy solutions aimed at
reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the state and regional levels.
- We work to build support for the implementation and strengthening of the
New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers’ regional Climate Change
Action Plan.
CA-CP is a science-based, non-partisan, 501(c)3 non-profit. (CA-CP ©2003)
Environmental
Protection Agency
Colby has completed the requirements for and now participates in the EPA New
England College and University Integrated Strategy. This program is aimed at
educating colleges and universities on sustainability practices and includes
a Self-Audit
compliance measure. Through this voluntary inspection, Colby removes itself
from the EPA's scheduled compliance inspection list. In addition to reducing
the amount of time and energy the EPA expends in compliance investigations,
Colby demonstrates its committment to environmental protection by taking the
role of assurance on itself.
Green Campus Consortium of Maine
The purpose of GCC is to work with institutions of higher learning in Maine to
find environmentally sustainable means of development and management, which will
also be based on principles of economic sustainability. To achieve these goals the
GCC works to inform itself and interested others by providing educational forums
- workshops, conferences, and special programs. The GCC provides a continuing forum
to explore new ideas, share practical experiences, and promote environmentally
effective practices.
