Green Driving Tips:
Cars are one of the largest causes of air pollution in the world. How can you
reduce the impact of your automobile use? Consider these smart driving
suggestions:
1. Plan and consolidate your trips: avoid congested routes, park centrally to
avoid repetitive cold starts, and dont drive to the gym.
2. Find a friend and ride together in the Jitney or carpool in the most fuel-efficient
car possible. To schedule a ride, call Security at x3345.
3. Accelerate smoothly - quick starts or gunning the engine puts the car into
enrichment mode, significantly increasing fuel consumption and emissions, especially
in heavy vehicles.
4. Have a diesel engine? Try Biodiesel - this renewable fuel is made from new
and used vegetable oils and animal fats and can be blended in any ratio with
petroleum-based diesel. No modifications are required and your emissions are
reduced. Learn more at - www.biodiesel.org
5. Driving for fewer than 5 minutes? Don't.
6. Avoid topping-off the gas tank - spilled gasoline evaporates and contributes
to air pollution.
7. When buying a car, investigate fuel economy and emissions (this information is readily available.)
Consider hybrid cars which save on fuel costs. There are
federal and Maine state tax breaks to sweeten the deal.
8. Keep your vehicle in good
repair. Regular tune-ups and good tire inflation improve fuel efficiency.
9. If you buy a pre-owned vehicle, try to purchase a 1996 or newer model. New emissions requirements
went into effect with 1996 models.
