Green Offices:
There are many things you can do to make your personal office more environmentally friendly. Most of the items are easy to incorporate in to your daily schedule.
- Turn off the lights when you leave your office.
- Utilize natural daylight as much as possible.
- Most ceiling lighting in offices on campus is florescent. If you use a desk lamp or floor lamp, ensure that the bulb is fluorescent or compact fluorescent. Do not use incandescent bulbs.
- Turn off overhead lights when using task lighting.
- If your office temperature is too warm, send a work order to PPD. Do not open a window since the cold air will only trigger the thermostat to generate more heat.
- Limit the electrical appliances in your office to those that are essential.
Look for the energy star label on appliance you buy. See http://www.colby.edu/eag/pag/pagenergystar.html
- Review documents on screen when possible and minimize printing paper documents. Re-use the reverse side of old papers for "draft printing". Use duplex printing whenever possible.
- Turn off your computer when not in use or ensure your computer is set up to
go into "sleep mode" when it is not in use. See http://www.colby.edu/info.tech/green/
- When purchasing new items for your office, think green! Look for items that
contain recycled materials. When purchasing office products form Boise Cascade
catalog, look for their "recycled product" designation. See http://www.colby.edu/eag/pag/pagshopping.html
