Since 2002 Colby's RESCUE (Recycle Everything! Save Colby's Usable Excess) Program has literally rescued thousands of unwanted, but usable items from one-way trips to the landfill. These items, ranging from electronics and clothing to furniture and cooking utensils, once thrown out by students at the end of the school year, are now left in designated spots for pick-up by hard-working RESCUE volunteers. Some of these items are donated to local charities. Others are stored over the summer and sold to returning students in the fall. A consolidation and expansion of existing waste prevention programs, Project RESCUE's aim was and still is to keep as many materials as possible out of the waste stream. In 2003, just one year after the program's inception, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized RESCUE as a "best management practice" and included it in a catalog of other such practices on its website. The catalog was designed to help institutions with pollution prevention, resource conservation, and environmental stewardship.
