In an effort to decrease the amount of waste that Colby produces, dining services and PPD have combined forces to process pre- and post-consumer food waste in all dining halls. The waste is source-separated, collected and taken to an organic processing plant in Unity, ME. The compost created is used in fertilizer and mulch that is sold throughout New England for numerous applications, including ball fields, golf courses, and landfill closures. Through its composting efforts, Colby not only reduces its consumption of landfill space, but also decreases the amount of electricity and water used in dining halls.

Yard wastes are also composted. Leaves and grass clippings are centrally collected and composted on campus. This saves on materials hauled to landfills and provides organic fertilizer for campus use. Brush, limbs and other collected wood materials are chipped and reused on campus saving on materials hauled to the landfill and the need to purchase additional materials for use on campus.
