The Physical Plant Department has installed VendingMisers on several vending
machines around campus. The VendingMiser is a power management device that
employs a passive infrared sensor, allowing the vending machine to power
down when the area around it is unoccupied and power back up when people
return to the area. When people are not around, the VendingMiser only repowers
the machine as needed in order to keep the product cold. Using "fuzzy logic"
the VendingMiser's controller learns from the habits of its users and then
modifies its time-out periods. In addition to saving energy, VendingMiser's
reduce vending machine maintenence costs and extend the life of vending
machines by decresing the number of compressor cycles that are run to keep
the machine cool. |
Quick Facts:
Already installed in several different places around campus, the VendingMiser devices pay for themselves in 210 days, thereafter continuing to reduce the school's energy consumption and cost, all without sacrificing effectiveness.
Tests of VendingMisers installed in the Physical Plant Department building have determined that the device saves $1.05 a day per machine in energy costs.
