Goals

  •  We will seek to eliminate or reduce the quantities of hazardous materials that we use.
  •  We will use the least hazardous materials practical to get the work done both in operating the campus and in teaching and research applications.
  •  We will meet or exceed all applicable safety regulations in the storage, handling, use, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  •  We will track use of hazardous materials.

    Practices and Accomplishments

  •  The College has decreased its use of chemicals enough to reduce its hazardous waste generation category from a large quantity generator to a small quantity plus generator (EPA classifications). Waste processing/shipping costs have been reduced by approximately one-third.
  •  Micro-scaling, inventory control and chemical substitutions, have reduced the use of hazardous substances in laboratories by approximately one-third. The use of formaldehyde has been eliminated and the use of mercury substantially reduced.
  •  A campus-wide environmental regulatory compliance program was initiated in 1999. The Director of Safety is the regulatory compliance coordinator. The College is substantially compliant with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
