Goals

  •  We will encourage integration of environmental issues and perspectives into courses in all relevant disciplines.
  •  We will incorporate service learning components into our curriculum that allow students to participate in developing and implementing environmentally sound practices on the campus and in the wider community.
  •  We will continue to develop relevant off-campus study, internships, and career opportunities to enable our students and graduates to participate in sustainability initiatives.
  •  We will educate the campus and local communities about the consequences of unsustainable activities and the possibilities for resolving them through training programs, seminars, workshops, and personal action guides.

    Practices and Accomplishments

  •  Personal Action Guides have been created on a series of topics relevant to community members. Click here to view the full series.
  •  Colby's Environmental Studies Program incorporates several different major and minor options for students:
The Environmental Policy track of the ES major focuses on environmental issues, sociology, resource management and law with a healthy dose of science.
The Environmental Science track of the ES major gives students both a broad scientific and social foundation while allowing students to specialize in areas as Environmental Chemistry, Toxicology, Conservation Biology and more.
The Environmental Studies minor gives depth to many social and natural science majors, allowing students to apply what they learn in their major to concepts and projects related to the environment.
The Environmental Education minor, offered in cooperation with the Education and Human Development department, give education students the option to focus on environmental learning in an interdisciplinary setting.
Click here to view the Environmental Studies web-site.
  •   The Chemistry, Biology and Geology departments all offer discipline-specific Environmental Concentrations. These program options give interested students the flexibility to complete a traditional chemistry, biology or geology major with a focus on environmental aspects of their chosen field.
  •  ES program faculty and students have helped to create trail maps and a guide for the Perkins Arboretum. To view click here.
  •  Every year, members of the Environmental Advisory Group work with other environmentally oriented groups on campus to develop a week of activities surrounding Earth Day.
