Steven Nuss received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Music Theory and
Composition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D in Music
Theory from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. A long-time
resident of Japan, he has made detailed studies of the history and theory of
Japanese chamber music (sankyoku) and imperial court music (gagaku). He is a
student in the Tokyo branch of the Kanze school of noh actors , and has lectured
and performed in that capacity throughout Japan and the United States,
including a solo performance at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. As a 1994 Fulbright
scholar at the Tokyo College of Music, he worked closely with Minoru Miki,
Toshiro Mayuzumi, T™ru Takemitsu, Akira Nishimura, Tokuhide Niimi, and other
prominent contemporary Japanese composers in exploring connections between their own
music and the traditional musical genres of Japan. He has taught on the music
faculties of Seishin University and International School in Tokyo, the City
University of New York extension in Hiroshima, Queens College of the City
University of New York, and is currently AssociateProfessor of Music at Colby
College. He teaches courses in Music Theory, World Music and traditional Japanese
music, art, and culture.
