Associate Vice President and Director of Communications

Fiscal year position.

The Director of Communications is responsible for articulating a strategic plan that distinguishes the College and thereby inspires support, attracts potential students, and gains the attention of the media and other publics. The director serves as an advisor to the president and is a member of the president’s senior staff. S/he is a member of the College Relations senior staff, is principal spokesperson for the College, and oversees the College marketing, publications, non-print media and press relations efforts.

The Director of Communications will be a skilled and experienced communications professional, capable of raising the profile and sharpening the image of Colby in the United States and abroad. H/she will possess the ability to think strategically and execute efficiently. S/he must have an appreciation for higher education in general and a sense of the rich experience of a selective residential liberal arts college in particular. The successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree, an advanced degree is a plus.

Required qualifications include: demonstrated success in a senior-level communications role of comparable complexity in academia, government, politics, public relations, or journalism; experience and success in the development and implementation of a wide range of communication strategies; experience with branding; knowledge and experience with web-based communication; experience in managing and developing a staff of communications professionals; successful experience in dealing with the national media; ability to manage funds and resources effectively; outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a decentralized environment; a lively, curious, and creative intellect and a style that includes flexibility, evenness, equanimity and a good sense of humor.
