Walk! Run! In the winter, ski! Automobiles release a big-time greenhouse gas that is contributing to global warming. We can do something about this! There are alternatives to driving a personal car! About 75% of Colby students have cars on campus, but most get used only 2-3 times a week. If you feel you MUST own a personal automobile, be aware of the choices available to you. SUVs are horribly pollutive and get only 10-15 miles to the gallon. Purchasing a more efficient vehicle saves you money and saves the planet too! Here is a list of good and bad vehicles. Share a ride! Colby has a ride board on its webpage as well as in the student center by the post office. Ride a Bike: most Waterville destinations are within a 15 minute bike ride, and country roads in Maine are great to ride on as well on the way to a berry-picking place, the Outing Club cabin, a restaurant, whatever. Avoid driving to on-campus locations. Our campus is small and driving from a dorm to the fieldhouse for a workout is absurd. The Colby Jitney: a shuttle to Waterville destinations. Call up security at x3345 and they'll get the Jitney to you. This service is in need of improvement, but do not lose patience! It works best to call ahead of time and tell security when you need a ride. Greyhound buses offer a 15% student discount.
