Water-Saving Tips

~Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.

~Be conscious about the length of your showers. Baths use less water, believe it or not. Pressure Colby to replace your dorm showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version.

~Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. If the toilet flush handle frequently sticks in the flush position, letting water run constantly, call PPD to replace or adjust it.

~Call PPD to repair dripping faucets. If your faucet is dripping at the rate of one drop per second, you can expect to waste 2,700 gallons per year.

~Be aware that what you are eating demands water: it takes 7 gallons of water to produce one serving of potatoes, and 2,607 gallons (9880 liters) for one steak! Cows take an incredible amount of water to raise.

~Use automatic dishwashers for full loads only.

~If washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running. Only run it while rinsing.

~Keep some drinking water in the refrigerator. Stop the wasteful practice of running the tap to cool water.

~Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or cleaning.

~Dispose of tissues, insects and other such waste in the trash rather than the toilet.
