Garden Manager/Instructor


Classification:  Full time; exempt

I.    General Responsibilities (narrative summary):

Garden Manager/Instructor will oversee/manage a non-profit community garden, working with various work crews including students, low income residents, individuals with psychiatric disabilities and disadvantaged youth; will also teach introductory college-level course on Sustainable Agriculture.

Work in the 50-member CSA involves overseeing the greenhouse operation in spring/winter, supervising various work crews of volunteers, employed gardeners and students, facilitating the day-to-day garden work including bed preparation, planting, weeding, watering, composting and harvesting; and overseeing delivery/distribution of produce.  

Work at the university involves teaching a 3 credit course entitled, Exploring Sustainable Agriculture through lecture, on line and lab work.  Course includes organic gardening techniques, soil science, social and environmental issues in sustainable agriculture and development of various marketing models, including operating a CSA.

II.  Qualifications (minimal requirements necessary for the position):

A.  Education and Experience:
•    Minimum Bachelor’s degree; MA degree preferred
•    Formal Education in any of the following, strongly preferred:
 
o    Biology
o    Outdoor and Environmental Education
o    Horticulture
o    Agroecology

o    Agriculture
o    Natural Resource Management
o    Environmental Studies
o    Sustainable Agriculture
•    Structured learning experiences, certification programs or apprenticeships on organic farms, strongly preferred
•    Knowledge and experience in the following, strongly preferred:
o    Organic industry
o    Non-profit businesses
o    Experiential learning
o    Organic gardening
o    Compost production
o    Greenhouse production
o    Local food systems
o    Community engagement
