Recommendations

  • Purchased electricity: We reduce our emissions by 3,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year that we buy green electricity!
    • Our green electricity contract puts us in sight of our goals. Renew the green electricity purchase.
    • Computers and other appliances are often left on when not in use, in classrooms, labs, and student rooms.
    • Colby should educate students and faculty about this waste of electricity.
  • On-campus Stationary: Colby emits about 13,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year in order to power the steam plant that heats the buildings.
    • Better control of dorm room temperature
    • Increasing student awareness about efficient heat use and energy conservation.
  • Transportation: Our campus vehicle fleet released about 300 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide last year.
    • Greening the campus vehicle fleet, by reducing the number of vehicles and switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles.
  • Solid Waste: Colby emits about 630 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year from the 1018 tons of solid waste we produce.
    • Increase awareness about recycling
    • Modification of student and staff behavior
    • Elect dorm sustainability representatives

Colby only needs to reduce 562 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions to reach 1990 levels, the short-term goal set by the New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers.
