Environmental History Research

Jan Plan 2004

I spent January working with Professor Andrew Frank at Florida Atlantic University. Andrew, a history professor, is currently researching the Seminole Indians of southern Florida. I classified my internship as "environmental history" because it was based around how the Seminoles used their land, as well as how their home, the Everglades, was abused by new settlers. My time with Andrew was spent searching for primary source documents about the Seminoles: letters, newspaper articles, and essays. I researched references to the hunting and trapping of alligators and birds, the trip taken by the original trailblazers of the Tamiami Trail, traders of feathers, plumes, and skins, Musa Isle and Coppinger's Gardens. I also studied the Minnie Moore-Wilson - papers, articles and letters written by an environmental activist who led the movement to save parts of the Everglades from rapidly spreading development. For my research I primarily used an online database posted by the Library of Congress entitled "Reclaiming the Everglades". This database compiles sixteen archival collections from the University of Miami, Florida International University, and the Historical Museum of South Florida. My job was to search through the letters, pictures, and articles for data that pertained to Professor Frank’s study. Specifically, I was looking for references to Seminoles who sold themselves and their services as well as references to non-Indians discussing Indians. My job was to sift through the information and find sources that seemed valid to Andrew's study. At the end of the month, I compiled a bibliography which I gave to Andrew to use as a guide during his research process.
