The Arkansas Ozarks -Assessment And Sustainable Management Of Ecosystem Services
15 Openings For Students To Take Part In REU Summer Research Program In The Arkansas Ozarks -Assessment And Sustainable Management Of Ecosystem Services
The University of Arkansas is conducting a Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF/REU) during summer of 2009 for up to 15 undergraduates who have completed at least 3 semesters of coursework. The focus of this REU is on field-based research on ecological services, and each student will work with a faculty mentor on issues ranging from water quality to ecology of birds and black bears in the Ozarks. This program works primarily with federally recognized Native American tribes and Native American students. However, all other interested students are encouraged to apply. This 10-week program consists of a one-week emersion course on field methods, 8 weeks of intensive Research Experience and a one week Data Analysis and Symposia. Room and board are included at the University of Arkansas, as well as a $400 weekly stipend and a travel allowance.

ECOLOGIC
EcoLogic's internship and volunteer program offers students and community members the opportunity to strengthen their professional skills and contribute to the conservation of our planet's biodiversity.
Education Internship (Summer)
The intern will work with EcoLogic’s Communications Officer and the Development team on an education and fundraising program for elementary and high school students.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Education Intern will develop introductory and promotional materials for educational programs that reflect EcoLogic’s mission and fit into selected elementary school syllabi; design a webpage for EcoLogic’s website that provides information on our programs; work with the Development and Communications teams to identify potential schools for implementation; and complete other miscellaneous communications tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Enrollment in or completion of undergraduate degree program.
* Experienced in education and outreach with schools.
* Familiarity with curriculum development and professional development for teachers.

Outreach Internship (Summer)
The intern will work with EcoLogic’s Communications Officer and the Development team to build a network of university students and student groups who support EcoLogic’s mission.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Outreach Intern will identify local university student groups who may be interested in supporting EcoLogic; contact university student groups to form a coalition of groups that support our work; develop a website that offers university students and student groups information on EcoLogic and opportunities to get involved; promote our Student Ambassador program through social networking sites; plan an event that unites these groups and garners support for EcoLogic activities; and complete other miscellaneous communications tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Enrollment in or completion of undergraduate degree program.

Public Relations Internship (Summer)
The intern will work with EcoLogic’s Communications Officer to write articles for EcoLogic publications and our website. This is an excellent opportunity for a marketing, journalism or media relations student, or just someone who is passionate about writing.
Duties and Responsibilites: The Public Relations Intern will gather updated information from Spanish-speaking program staff; write articles for our monthly eNews, print newsletter, and for our website; compose in-depth project summaries and case study briefs; assist the Communications Officer with the design, production and dissemination of promotional materials for use at conferences and events; support communications activities at local fundraising events; and other miscellaneous communications tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Enrollment in or completion of undergraduate degree program.
* Previous experience in marketing, journalism or outreach required.
* Proficiency in Spanish required.
* Adept with Microsoft Office programs, including Word and Publisher.
* Excellent writing and design skills.

The intern will work with EcoLogic’s Communications Officer to improve and expand our online presence by updating our website, creating and managing an EcoLogic page on social networking sites, and revising our information on various fundraising websites.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Online Communications Intern will revise existing content and create new materials for EcoLogic’s website (www.ecologic.org); work with the Communications Officer to build and enhance the organization’s online presence through social networking websites (e.g. MySpace, Facebook, change.org and YouTube); work with communications and development staff to update information provided on online donation sites; investigate new opportunities to expand EcoLogic’s online presence; and complete other miscellaneous communications tasks as assigned.

Two Salamander Field Technicians Needed

Opportunity Description: Student Field Technicians: Salamander surveys in Shenandoah National Park
The U.S. Geological Survey’s Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative Northeast program will be hiring 2 student field
technicians in 2009. One technician is needed beginning in the spring (01 May) through mid-August. Another technician will be hired for the summer from mid-June through mid-August. Both positions could be extended for 4-6 weeks in September and October, pending funding.
Technicians are primarily responsible for conducting salamander
surveys in Shenandoah National Park (Virginia). Major duties involve
terrestrial salamander surveys that include: active sampling for
salamanders during the day by lifting of cover objects; passive
sampling at night during and after rain events; capturing, measuring,
weighing and possibly marking salamanders with elastomer; collecting
tail tips for genetic analyses; and conducting habitat assessments.
Technicians may also participate in a stream salamander surveys as
well. The position requires completion of academic coursework in
wildlife biology or related fields. Previous field experience with
salamander surveys and the catching, handling, measuring and marking
of amphibians is
preferable. Students must be willing to work independently but most
fieldwork will be conducted as part of teams of 2-3 people, so a
demonstrated ability and desire to work effectively with a group is
imperative. Work will be conducted on steep, rocky terrain during
varying weather conditions. Students need to be in good physical
condition and
comfort and competence with outdoor work.
Students must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to work at
least 40 hours per week under a flexible schedule (including early
morning, nighttime and weekend work). Students are responsible for
all costs of transportation to and from Shenandoah National Park.
Housing accommodations are provided while in Shenandoah National Park
in a
facility shared with other research technicians and staff.
Compensation is commensurate with the level of education and
experience (approximate wages are: $14-15/hour for two or more years
of college, $16-18/hour for completion of BA/BS degree or higher).

Four – Six Summer Sea Turtle Husbandry Internships at Clearwater Marine Aquarium
Duration of summer internship: May-September (flexible with school
schedules)
The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation and Husbandry internship offered at the
Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) gives candidates a hands-on learning
experience caring for sea turtles currently undergoing
rehabilitation, as well as sea turtles that remain as permanent
residents at CMA. Interns will be able to assist in diet preparation,
feeding, record keeping, exhibit maintenance, medical examinations
and procedures as well as enrichment. Interns will also assist in
giving public presentations to guests of CMA to educate them about
these protected and endangered species. There will also be
opportunities to go on stranding calls and work along side staff for
triage, stabilizing and other veterinary procedures. Candidates
should be able to perform physically demanding duties, work odd hours
and long shifts and be currently enrolled in a four-year college
program in veterinary science, biology, marine biology, environmental
science, or another related field, or be a recent college gradu!

habitats, and species diversity? The CLM Internship Program is a
wonderful opportunity to begin a career in natural resource management
and conservation!
Each year, the Conservation and Land Management Internship Program
places 75-100 college graduates in five-month paid internships to assist
professional staff at the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park
Service (NPS), US Fish and Wildlife Service (NFWF) or US Geologic Survey
(USGS). Internships are primarily located in one of the thirteen western
states, including Alaska! Each internship is unique and may focus on
botany, wildlife, or a combination of the two. Projects may include
monitoring or assessing threatened and endangered species and habitats.

GARDEN MANAGER/INSTRUCTOR

I. General Responsibilities (narrative summary):
Garden Manager/Instructor will oversee/manage a non-profit community garden, working with various work crews including students, low income residents, individuals with psychiatric disabilities and disadvantaged youth; will also teach introductory college-level course on Sustainable Agriculture.
Work in the 50-member CSA involves overseeing the greenhouse operation in spring/winter, supervising various work crews of volunteers, employed gardeners and students, facilitating the day-to-day garden work including bed preparation, planting, weeding, watering, composting and harvesting; and overseeing delivery/distribution of produce.
Work at the university involves teaching a 3 credit course entitled, Exploring Sustainable Agriculture through lecture, on line and lab work. Course includes organic gardening techniques, soil science, social and environmental issues in sustainable agriculture and development of various marketing models, including operating a CSA.
