Kristian Parker '94

The Role of Philanthropy in Changing Environmental Polices: A Look at Climate Change and Marine Conservation

 

Kristian Parker is the trustee in charge of the environment program at the Oak Foundation. Danish born, Kristian Parker was

brought up in Switzerland, near and around the city Geneva. He graduated from Colby in 1994 with major in Biology and went on to do a

PhD at Duke Universities Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina.  There he studied chemically mediated fish behavior and its role in

predator-prey interactions in tidal creek fish.  After a post-doc at the University of Hawaii, where he maintained a biofouling testing

program for the Office of Naval Research and studied settling behavior in nudibranch, Kristian returned to Switzerland in 2003 to work full

time for his family's foundation.  There he advises  the  global environment program which focuses on Climate change and marine

conservation (www.oakfnd.org). Oak Foundation is a family foundation that commits its resources to address issues of global social and

environmental concern, particularly those that have a major impact on the lives of the disadvantaged.

** ES PROGRAM NEWS:

Steve Erario Wins Udall Scholarship

Stephen Erario Õ10 has been named a 2008 Udall Scholar, one of 80 such scholars nationally. Erario, an environmental studies and science, technology, and society double major, was nominated based on his academic achievement and leadership potential. Named in honor of Congressman Morris K. Udall, the prestigious $5,000 scholarship was awarded to Erario based on an essay and his involvement on campus and in Waterville.

 

Mellon Applications are due WEDNESDAY, April 23!!

If anyone is considering applying for a Mellon grant for a summer internship, please send me all your materials by Wednesday, April 23.

The Environmental Studies Program is very fortunate to have received money from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that can be used to provide stipends to students who want to undertake environmentally-related internships in the summer and over Jan Plan. If you are interested in applying for a summer Mellon internship and you meet the following criteria, please consider applying:

Criteria for Environmental Internship Stipend:

     * Preference for ES majors, ES minors/concentrations

    * Current seniors eligible for January only

    * Internship should be related to environmental science or policy coursework

    * Preference for students interning in humanitarian, not-for-profit, and governmental organizations

    * Applicants must be in good academic standing and be able to demonstrate financial need

 

Applications should include the following:

     * A written proposal describing the organization sponsoring the internship, the internship responsibilities, and the relationship of the internship to environmental science or policy coursework and to your future career goals;

    * A letter of recommendation from a Colby faculty member;

    * A current resume;

    * A budget proposal listing projected income (including wages, stipends, family contribution, gifts and other) and projected expenses (including transportation, housing, utilities, food, and other); and

    * A letter or other communication from the sponsoring organization confirming the internship.

Campus Sustainability Fellow, The Hill School

Position Summary:

The Campus Sustainability Fellow will continue to develop the SchoolÕs sustainability program, which aims to:

-    Raise environmental awareness among students, faculty, and staff;

-    Integrate sustainability practices into all aspects of school life and operations; and

-    Redce The Hill SchoolÕs environmental impacts. 

Responsibilities include:

Building relationships with all school constituents to generate ideas and support for a successful sustainability program.

Completing a campus sustainability audit and establishing a set of indicators to document progress.

Using the audit and other resources to create a comprehensive plan with specific projects for sustainability.

Establishing and managing a sustainability task force to aid in the completion of the campus sustainability audit and plan, in setting priorities for sustainability, and in implementing changes.

Advising and managing several ongoing student activities, including the student environmental club (Green Initiative), the Green Work-Job team, the SchoolÕs participation in the Green Cup Challenge, the Mobile Recycling Team, and the spring move-out recycling event, and participating in the Charterhouse Challenge.

Overseeing the development of a small school garden as an after-school activity or club.

Educating the School community about sustainability and building interest in the program through consistent, reliable communications.

Maintaining the ŅSustainability at The HillÓ section of the SchoolÕs website and the intranet site for sustainability.

Working with the Business and Advancement offices to identify and pursue funding, including grants.

Representing and sharing the SchoolÕs sustainability program beyond campus through NAIS networks, the Environmental Education Committee of the local Chamber of Commerce, and other means.

 Qualifications:

Ideally the successful candidate will have: a bachelor's degree in environmental studies, science, management, conservation, or related field; knowledge of sustainability issues and best practices; commitment to institutional and societal sustainability; ability to develop relationships and collaborate with people throughout a school community; excellent organizational, analytical, and planning skills; strong writing skills; and the ability to work independently.  Experience as an intern in a college campus sustainability office strongly preferred; interest in working in a boarding school environment strongly preferred.  Experience with fundraising/grant writing a plus.

Paid Summer Internship Opportunity - Fairfield and Winslow Sustainability Projects

Two exciting positions for a paid summer internship are now available to initiate a sustainability project for the bordering towns of Fairfield and Winslow.  Housing, meal plan, and transportation expenses will be covered.

 

The intern will research what other communities, both in and outside of Maine, have done and are doing to enhance sustainability, focusing mainly on reducing energy consumption and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions.  The research will include visits to some of these communities and meetings with climate change authorities.  The intern will also perform an audit of the city's energy use.  At the completion of the project the intern will submit a report containing the findings of the research and audit and recommendations for action steps to reduce energy use as well as to develop a continuing sustainability program.

 

If you are interested, please send a cover letter explaining why the you are interested in the job and what qualifications you possess to successfully complete the proposed internship. Description:

The Environmental Center's Sustainability Education internship is a multifaceted position designed to provide professional training in all aspects of environmental non-profit work while focusing on campus sustainability. The EC intern will gain experience with outreach and public involvement, media and communications, organizing events and educational programs, managing campus and community projects, fundraising, and administration. The successful candidate will be able to emphasize one or two specific areas depending on their interests and the needs of the EC. The Intern works under the supervision of the Environmental Center Coordinator and works closely with the Office of Housing, both of which are under the Department of Student Affairs.

 

The Program: The EC is a student-funded program that has been on the campus since 1991. The center provides leadership training by supporting students who want to improve the quality of life for the campus and the community. The EC includes a library with over 2000 books, magazines and videos and a rich history nurturing student activism. The EC is an integral part of Fort Lewis CollegeÕs commitment to sustainability in higher education. The center is working on a number of new initiatives, including a new LEED-certified student union building, a Sustainability Action Plan for the College, and a community-based learning program for the new Environmental Studies program.

 

Qualifications:

The Intern should be in final stages of an undergraduate degree program or already possess their bachelorÕs degree. The Intern should have some knowledge of environmental concerns on college campuses. Previous experience with a college/university environmental program or club, environmental studies department, or campus recycling program is desired.

 

Duration: 9 months

Start Date: August 11, 2008

Hours: 40

Compensation: The Environmental Center intern will receive on-campus housing, a stipend of $5,000. The position is also eligible for an Americorps education award of $2,362.50 upon completion of the internship. The position requires a flexible work schedule, including some nights and weekends.

Part-time Summer Conservation Intern

The Kennebec Estuary Collaboration (KEC) is a partnership between the Phippsburg and Lower Kennebec Regional land trusts and is dedicated to conserving the land and waters of the Kennebec Estuary.   The Summer Conservation Intern will have the opportunity to learn about land protection and stewardship while performing hands-on work that makes a meaningful contribution to our region.

Job Duties

The Kennebec Estuary Collaboration seeks applicants for a paid 20 hour per week internship.  The Summer Conservation Intern will perform a variety of land trust activities.  In the field, the intern will help implement property management plans.  This may include marking boundaries, signage, maintaining trails and building bridges.   In the office, the intern will assist with grant writing, event planning, data entry, filing and record keeping.

Preferred Education

Background in biology, ecology, and/or other environmental sciences

Preferred Skills and Licenses

 

    *          Familiar with Microsoft Office

    *          Ability to use hand tools and power tools in the field

    *          Ability to work independently
