ES Student Action: Climate Change at Colby

Inspired by the growing concern about global warming, more technically known as global climate change, Environmental Studies students at Colby have become leaders in local Climate Change action.

Green Dialogue Housing at Colby

In 2005 Go-Ho became the Green Dorm as part of Colby's Dialogue Housing initiative. Go-Ho residents are conscious of how their daily actions impact the earth and have made a commitment to adopting a green lifestyle. Student Research Assistants

Over the course of the summer, several ES faculty members have supervised student research positions in the Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Economics and Environmental Studies departments. The various projects have been funded through generous grants from the Mellon Foundation. To learn more about the work these students have been doing, go to the faculty/student research page.

Student Advisory Committee

The Advisory Committee is a way for students to be involved with the ES program by providing suggestions and advice. We are looking into ways to improve the sense of community within the ES program, coming up with ideas for speakers and career panels, and looking into the possibility of an environmental honor society. Feel free to contact us with your ideas and suggestions.

Environmental Studies: Policy major Ryan Weaver '07 was recognized for his commitment to civic engagement. In a ceremony in Augusta the Maine Campus Compact's Campus Civic Stewardship Awards were given out to several deserving members of the Colby community.  Ryan was selected to receive an Unsung Heroes Student Award.

Campus Environmental Presence

• Environmental Coalition - The EC seeks to educate the Colby and Waterville communities about recycling, water quality, maple sugaring, forest management, and other environmental issues.
  
• Environmental Studies Club The ES Club works to promote camaraderie among ES students and to encourage interaction between ES students and faculty at Colby. Regular activities may include: club dinners and lunches, off-campus outings, and volunteering to help at various environmental conferences or lectures. Special events will include: Study Abroad discussion, Earth Day involvement, Informational Panel for Prospective students on April Visit Days, and an end of year dinner.
  
• Colby Outing Club - The COC is a source of information, inspiration, and equipment for a wide range of outdoor activities. The COC owns a cabin, runs weekend trips throughout Maine (including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking trips).
  
• Colby Mountaineering Club - The Colby Mountaineering Club is composed of students dedicated to rock, ice, and alpine climbing. They lead outdoor rock and ice climbing trips as well as provide free leader training.
  
• Colby Woodsmen Team - The Woodsmen's Team is a student athletic club that practices old-time logging skills such as standing-block chop, log rolling, sawing, pole climbing; and newer events such as axe throw and chainsaw.
  
• Environmental Education - Members of the Environmental Education Club teach local schoolchildren about environmental issues.
  
• COOT - Colby Outdoor Orientation Trip is coordinated by the COOT committee for incoming students.
