Environmental Policy, Class of 2017

I knew I wanted to study the ocean before I could even spell marine biologist. Growing up in the beach town of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, I was in close proximity with the Long Island Sound for most of my life. Exploring the beaches and tidal pools kick-started my interest and eventual foray into the world of marine science. Since Kindergarten, I spent almost every summer learning about the Long Island Sound through marine science camps.ericstandingup

When I moved from Connecticut to Bethesda, Maryland, I no longer had such close access to the beach. Instead, I had access to renowned marine science institutions, such as the National Aquariums in Baltimore and Washington D.C., both of which I volunteered at as an exhibit guide. I also spent a summer interning at the Chesapeake Bay Field Station, where I spent my time either teaching campers about the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding ecosystems, or working on my own research project which involved cataloguing cartilaginous and bony fishes found in the bay. Teaching people about the ocean and what they could do to conserve it changed my focus from pursuing a career in marine science, to pursuing a career in marine conservation.

I came to Colby because of the college’s well-established environmental science and policy programs, as well as the numerous marine science and policy classes the school offers. I knew at Colby I could learn the information and gain the skills necessary for a career in marine conservation policy. I am currently pursuing a major in Environmental Policy and minor in Creative Writing. As a Sophomore I am taking Intro to Ecology, Marine Wildlife Conservation and Management, Principles of Microeconomics, and Fiction Writing. During this upcoming Jan Plan, I will be going with bunch of Colby students to Belize with Professor Russ Cole to study the ecology and conservation of rainforest and marine ecosystems. Outside of class, I help Professor Alison Bates with her research on the public’s perceived risks of subsea electricity transmission, I am a Colby Outing Club leader, I have lead for Colby Outdoor Orientation Trips, and I am a member of the Colby Waterpolo team.
