Study abroad & January term

Environmental science students may participate in a variety of study abroad programs all over the world. A list of approved programs is available through the Off-Campus Study Office. Colby is a member of a consortium that sponsors the Center for Sustainable Development Studies, through which qualified students are provided the opportunity for a semester of study in Costa Rica. Colby also maintains affiliate status with the School for Field Studies and with the Semester in Environmental Science at the Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole.

The January term is also a time when students can study and undertake internships off campus. There are a number of firms and agencies the provide internship experience that help students gain important background and also allows them to sample different aspects of the environmental science field. Additionally there are field courses offered in January that provide ecological training in various parts of the world, from the wintery Maine woods to tropical forests and coral reefs.

Colby's Environmental Studies Program Coordinator not only helps to locate desirable off-campus employment and internship possibilities, but she also helps students to find the right fit. Funds from the Mellon Foundation Colby's Cotter Internship Fund are available to reduce the chances that desirable educational experiences do not have to be declined for financial reasons.
