Professor Ryan Drake of Fairfield University takes up the issue of narcissism, both psychological and political, in the performance of sophistry. Plato's dialogue, Protagoras, serves as the focal point in his argument that a mutual narcissism (borrowing characterizations from Freud and Adorno) between sophist and audience operates to preserve appearances of power while cultivating impotence and unacknowledged dependence. Professor Drake's paper offers, furthermore, insights about Socrates' limited discursive weapons for combating that sophistic dynamic.
