Professor Mark Sokolsky will discuss “Rus vs. Them: Russian Nationalism in Historical Perspective.”
Under President Vladimir Putin, the Russia Federation has emerged as a destabilizing force on the global stage. Russia’s turn to nationalism at home and subversion abroad has taken many by surprise. Why the animosity? Why has Putin’s government embraced such an aggressively anti-Western stance, and why has it resonated so strongly among much of the Russian population? To help explain the worldview of “Team Putin,” Professor Sokolsky will address the development of Russian nationalist ideas, Russians’ views of the “the West” (past and present), and the enduring appeal of a state-centered, quasi-imperial nationalism in Russia today.
