The 2017-18 Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality colloquium theme is gender and violence.

The series begins with a talk by Colby philosophy professor Jill Gordon—“Black Bodies Matter: A Reading of Ta-Nahisi Coates’s Between the World and Me.” Contrary to scholars who take white consciousness, imagination, and other ideations as sources of “seeing” and interpreting the Black body, Gordon argue that Coates’s book makes a materialist, or anti-idealist, argument that violence against the Black body is the cause of, not merely the effect of, various racist ideations.
