Should a district map be compact? competitive? represent communities of interest? Can it be all three at once? In this talk I will discuss different criteria for measuring fairness of district maps and mathematical ideas it gives rise to. In particular, I will describe S. Wang's statistical tests for gerrymandering and an efficient algorithm for their implementation.
