In this talk, I discuss Bayesian nonparametric methods for applied biomedical research. I begin with an overview of the fundamentals of Bayesian statistics and discuss the motivation behind the emerging field of nonparametrics. After learning some common nonparametric techniques, I continue with two novel implementations in biomedical research. In the first I look at the effect antiretroviral regimens have on liver functionality in HIV/HCV coinfected individuals using Bayesian Additive Regression Trees. In the second we estimate incidence of Type II Diabetes among new initiators of anti-psychotic medications using Dirichlet processes and data from the Veterans Aging Cohort Study. We will conclude by discussing available research avenues in Bayesian nonparametrics.
