BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONY NO. 5 AND STRAVINSKY: L’histore Du Soldat (complete)
Colby Symphony Orchestra
Jonathan Hallstrom, conductor
(A Music from Colby Event)
Sunday, March 13, 3:00 p.m., Williamson Art Center at Lawrence High School in Fairfield
Ludwig van Beethoven’s popular fifth symphony is an important work in that it bridged the gap between classical and romantic musical perspectives at the end of the 18th century. Igor Stravinsky’s “neoclassical” work L’Histoire du Soldat (A Soldier’s Tale) performed the opposite function at the beginning of the 20th century. We will present L’histoire in Stravinsky’s original “portable” version, which included simple staging and costumes that would allow it to be mounted with minimal effort and expense (a wise choice given the severe financial constraints faced by post-world war I presenters.) We’re very excited to be performing this concert in Fairfield High School’s wonderful Williamson Art Center.
